new changing table

actually it's the same old table, but with a new paint job and new knobs. I like it MUCH better than the other way...you know, the way I was all excited about a year ago or so? Yeah, I got over that fast. The gray is much nicer and low-key. And the knobs are just awesome.

My mom and I also painted the bedside table and once it gets a bit warmer out I plan to do the dresser in Milo's room as well.

big week

I'm pretty much the worst blogger ever, ug! I keep wanting to wait until I have pictures ready to post, and then never get around to editing the photos because I have a six-month-old, and therefore never posting even when there is something new to relate. Arg.

Milo is six months old! He's sitting like a champion and loves putting pretty much everything in his mouth. I think his happiest day ever may have been the day he realized he could put ALL of his toes in his mouth. It's like a toy that he can never lose.

At our appointment on the 27th he weighed 16 lbs 6 oz and was 25.5 inches long, which means he has more than doubled his birth weight and has grown 6.5 inches. I'm glad I'm not growing at that rate, I'd be a giant by now.

My parents are here right now, which is really fun. We're planning on going to the Spud again tomorrow night if the weather allows so if anyone local is reading this - hope to see you there!

What else...oh yes, we've started feeding him rice cereal and he seems to like it very much. To the point where he tries to grab the spoon himself and jam it in his mouth (or eye, or up his nose...his aim isn't the greatest just yet). He doesn't eat a ton before he gets bored and starts looking for the bottle, but it's a start.

I have pictures of pretty much all of the above, so I will try to do a photo post here soon. Since Mom and Dad are here I should have a few extra minutes to do some quick post processing.

Happy Friday!

spud drive in

Last night was Milo's first night at the drive-in. We took him to see something completely age appropriate - 'XMen Origins - Wolverine'. I think he especially liked the fighting and bloodshed. Kidding!!! He was totally conked out before it started. Here are some pictures of him with our friends and neighbors Emma & Trask before the movie started.

traskspud

You'll notice Emma is wearing a hat while Milo is not. Yeah, we forgot to bring a hat for him. Or a jacket. Thankfully we had plenty of blankets and wrapped him up like a tiny little potato bud and he was cozy as all get-out. So cozy that he slept all night. In his carseat. Completely strapped & tightened.

acceptance

I have moved past frustration and into the acceptance phase. Thinking about it from Milo's point of view - where would I rather sleep? In a weird cage with elephants and surrounded by oddly-printed blue squishiness? Or in a cozy bed next to someone you love and trust and produces food whenever you demand it?

Of course I'd go with the elephants. And if we could somehow combine elephants and some sort of night time snack machine, it'd be like heaven. Snacky, elephant-print heaven.

stupid crib

We are having no success whatsoever getting Milo to sleep in his crib at night. He can be completely passed out, snoring, drooling, practically comatose, but the instant his head touches that mattress he is wide awake, looking around and eventually crying like we were trying to kill him. Or at least torture him in some new and horrible way. We've tried sitting next to him and patting his belly to try to soothe him, picking him up and setting him back down once he's relaxed a bit, putting his mattress at an incline...no luck. For some reason sleeping flat is only acceptable if it is in our bed.

Oh well, as my friend Emilie said to me via Facebook - don't worry, he won't still be sleeping with you when he's 20. So at least there's that.

It's looking like I'm going to have to stop wearing dangly earrings for a while - pretty much everything that his hands come into contact with immediately get swallowed up into a Vulcan death grip, which wouldn't be too bad except as soon as he gets something in his tiny little fist he immediately tries to put it in his mouth. And although my earrings are long, they aren't THAT long. Ouch.

But in better news, I've put new pictures on the website! Hooray!

high chair and new shoes

The other night we put Milo in his high chair for the first time as a test drive to see how he liked it. Turns out he loves the thing - he was laughing and bopping around like crazy. I got some great video of it but here's a pic for now -

_MG_0474-Edit

And for those of you who have been closely following the great shoe debate of 2009, we decided to keep the Vans. The Chucks were just a little too burly for a kid who isn't walking yet - they were just like regular Chuck Taylors but smaller, rather than the soft crib shoes we got from Vans.

playtime

a mishmash of video clips of milo in the jumperoo and his playpen.

Milo and I had a nice trip to Idaho Falls today - he fell asleep less than a block from the house and slept all the way there and even through me browsing at Old Navy. After I fed him we had a great time cruising the mall and Target - he helped me pick out a scarf. On the way home we ran into some insane rainstorms that turned into sleety snowy garbage about ten minutes after we got home - glad we missed out on that.

Also, Milo is five months old today! I can't even believe it. I remember being in the hospital way too clearly for it to have been five months ago already.

We got the Baby Bach video for Milo the other day and he loves it. Loves it! Who knew?

easter treats

they were addressed to Milo, but he's not really on the solid food yet so I suppose Nate and I will just have to take care of the candy. It's a hard life, really.

sick again

just returned from dr. pockat's office and all is well. Milo most likely just has a virus and should start to get better any day now. His ears are all clear as well, yahoo!

He has gained almost a pound in the last nineteen days and is now up to 13 lbs 11 oz. He's huge! We've started to supplement his bedtime feeds with formula as I can't keep up with his demand any more. I think in the next few weeks we may try him on some rice cereal, which i'm going to guess he'll like a lot based on the way he sucks down pretty much everything that we've given him so far (tylenol, oral vaccination, antibiotics, etc.).

my new camera has video!

Milo is starting to grab onto things a little bit. He hasn't actually reached for anything yet, but if he touches something he'll hang on to it, which is really pretty cool. Except for when it's my hair. Then it just hurts. Here's some video of him playing in his playpen earlier this week -

He's also getting really good at standing up - he'll push up against whatever he's propped on and keep his knees straight and everything. It's pretty cool. I think he's going to be an early walker.

and just as a side note, both of these videos were shot with my new camera. It's pretty funky - I can use any lens i want to shoot videos, but once I start recording I can't change the focus point. So if Milo or whoever my subject is changes their distance to the camera, I have to move with them or they get all blurry. It'll be a fun challenge!!

on an unrelated note, we've become a bit obsessed with the notion of buying a Wii - any opinions? Nate really wants MarioKart and we both think that the Wii Fit actually looks pretty fun. Who has one? Do you like it? Good times?

4 month checkup

Milo is now officially two feet tall! His weight is up to 12 lbs 12 oz and he's 24" exactly. His weight, height and head circumference are all in about the 25th percentile and have consistently been there throughout his life. So he's little, but he's growing at a normal rate and his size right now has nothing to do with what his size might end up at when he grows up.

I've finally gotten my slideshow software update figured out and have the slideshows back up on his website. I've added the Feb pictures and hope to get the March ones up today as well - nothing like running ahead of schedule!

We also did his 2nd round of shots at this visit. He did not like that much at all but Elaine is SO fast it was over before he knew it. He had the same reaction this time as last time - sleep! When we got back to daycare he slept for the rest of the afternoon. I think the girls thought I had drugged him.

His ear infection is all cleared up and he sounds a lot better - not nearly as sniffly and snotty. We still are having him sleep sitting up for the most part as it seems to help him sleep a bit better. I'm on a mission for some crib bumpers tomorrow (after checking with the pediatrician) for when he starts sleeping in the crib again. He's so wiggly he'll often end up with his feet stuck between the bars and I'm afraid he's going to break an ankle.

He's been very smiley and happy and talkative, which is sooo fun and hilarious. The girls at daycare all seem to really like him in spite of the frequent blowouts and are often telling me what a chill baby he is, so that is awesome.

I have some video of him in the Jumperoo but am out of room on Roger to load it, so you all will just have to wait until Harold gets here and I'll get that posted. Hopefully sometime next week!

jumperooooooo

a few months ago i went in on the purchase of a jumperoo exersaucer with my friend ingrid - her little boy is about 5 months older than milo so the timing is great - riley grew out of it just as milo is getting old enough to start using it.

i brought it home last night and he looooooves it. sat in it for about a half hour and just goggled at everything. the seat is suspended on springs so it moves whenever he does, causing a chain reaction of rattles and squeaks and as soon as we get batteries, flashing lights. he can *almost* touch the ground to bounce and spin, I don't think it'll be much longer.

The coolest part though is that it seemed like he was actually trying to grab for stuff! I'm sure when he starts pulling things off the table and spilling drinks we'll long for the 'non-grabbing' days, but right now it's very cool to watch him become more aware of his surroundings.

Daycare is going well. I've started to bring bottles for his morning and afternoon feedings and go over there around lunchtime to nurse him. It's been working out perfectly, except for the mornings when he sleeps until 10 AM and then isn't hungry again until 2 or 3. it doesn't happen too often, but it definitely throws my schedule out of whack when it happens.

Pics of him rocking the Jumperoo -

jumping baby

this one is from early january when my parents were here - as milo bounces he executes these awesome leg kicks in mid air. hilarity ensued.

hopefully now that we're shooting more video I'll get better at it. This one is a little jerky.

in other news, his first (short) week at daycare went really well. we're settling into a good routine - he's usually asleep when I drop him off, they give him a bottle when he wakes up and then I go over there around lunch time and again mid-afternoon to nurse him. He seems to be adjusting really quickly, which is great. He even likes the swing they have! It's situated in a corner so he has a good view of everything while he's in it. He's the youngest in there by 3 mos or so - most of the other babies are crawling and pulling themselves up on things already.

His first day of daycare:

let there be video!

hee hee it seems like i've got this video camera thing sort of figured out. as long as there is no editing involved, that is. here's a video of milo and my dad back in the beginning of january. we have some things that are more current but I have to figure out the editing as they are a bit on the long side!

not much else new to report i suppose. although he's rolling over now! oooo i have video of that, too!

oh what fun this is. although now i'll bet you all get spoiled by video! :)

Dustin, Jessica, Miluse & Isis are here for a couple of weeks, which is awesome. It's so nice to have visitors! Miluse was so funny when she first saw Milo (she's 10 mos old) - huuuge smile and she started clapping like crazy.

Milo is getting better and better at sleeping - last night he went down around 9 or so and slept all the way until 4:30 - it was great! And then went back to sleep until about 7:30, when he decided he required bouncing.

We're somehow having some issues with our web conferencing - mostly skype-related. I was trying to talk to our friends in NZ the other day and she could see but not hear us, and today Nate's parents could see and hear us but we couldn't see them. Very odd. Hopefully we'll get it worked out soon!

I'm back to work on Tuesday so you'll probably see an increase in posting as I take breaks from the excitement of accounting. Although now that I think about it, I'm going to be all kinds of busy - most of the department is going to be gone anywhere from 2-4 weeks for the offseason to use up all of their vacation time before the end of the fiscal year. I, of course, have already used mine over these last twelve weeks. Thankfully Ingrid had her maternity leave this summer so she'll be there the whole time as well!

finally!

roger is home, hooray!!! what does this mean for you? new pictures on the website, of course!

we've just been trucking along here...the front wheel for his fancy chariot stroller should get here today so I'm looking forward to our inaugural walk in it. He's been getting better about napping - once he's asleep I can put him down in his vibrate-y chair or on the bed and he will generally sleep on his own for about a half hour. Doesn't sound like a lot of time, I know, but you'd be amazed what you can get done in a half hour!

The bouncy ball is still the best way to calm him down. I don't get it.

Thanks to everyone for your advice on colicky and fussy babies - I think he is just fussy and will grow out of it. It does seem to be improving slowly - he hasn't made me cry in at least a week or two!

We took our first trip to the mall a few weeks ago with my friend Emily - she is about 14 weeks pregnant and needed to find some maternity jeans, stat. He did really well - we got a stroller frame for the carseat so I can just take him out of the car and snap the seat into the frame without having to muck about taking him out of his carseat or waking him up. He browsed Pier 1 and Target and Old Navy quite successfully and enjoyed picking out some new sleepers at Macy's.

Check out the new pictures; I just have January up for now but will try to make some progress on ones we've shot so far in February.

Hooray for Roger!!!

Thursday, February 5, 2009

hooray!

an album of images from january (and a few strays from december) will be up soon on milo's website.

later:

i take it back. for some reason i can't browse to the images to upload them. curious!

dawning of the age of fussiness

yup, it's official...we have a ridiculously fussy baby.

the only thing that will make him stop crying is sitting on the exercise ball and bouncing. this has the added bonus of putting him to sleep. the downside is even once he's asleep, you can't stop bouncing. and god forbid you try to put him in his playpen or crib for his nap...about 3 minutes after setting him down he will achieve max volume and ear-splittingness. i hope daycare has someone who likes to bounce!

on the upside i DO think it's getting slowly better. after eating he'll amuse himself in his playpen for up to 45 mins before deciding it's bouncy time, which gives me a chance to eat and shower and things of that nature.

i will not go into nights because it's just too depressing. let's just say he wakes up a lot and won't go back to a sound sleep without bouncing or eating. nate and i are both very tired. i *heart* coffee.

on the computer front, roger is in jackson as we speak, getting his third replacement power supply in 4 years. as soon as i get the rest of my deposits for my summer weddings i am going to order a tower, weeha!! not sure what i'm going to name it yet.

at our ped appt on the 29th milo was 10 lbs, 5 oz and had grown another inch! he's still on the small side for his age but is growing at a great rate. he had his first round of shots, which made everyone cry except the nurse. she was great though - lightning quick!

i hope to post january pics to the website today, we'll just have to see if the little bird cooperates. so far it's not looking great, but we'll see!

oh and pls forgive any typos etc. - it's hard to bounce and type!

Roger = my computer.

Roger will no longer turn on.

This may put a damper on photos and blog posts for a while.

babies fart

A lot. Who knew?

He actually seems to have most of the general bodily functions pretty well dialed - peeing, pooping, farting, burping, and throwing up are all well within his grasp. Sadly, cleaning up after himself is not.

My mom and dad are here for two weeks and it's been just great! My mom is cleaning the house - getting to all the stuff that Nate and I would never ever have done like cleaning the woodwork and actually pulling the knobs off of the stove to clean behind them. My dad has been doing projects that we also have not gotten to - on the agenda are shelves for my bathroom, taking the ski rack off of the Jeep and he and Nate have already weather-stripped the windows. It's warmer in here already. Plus they're putting in a ton of baby time, which is just great as well.

Speaking of great, Nate took Milo on his own all night last night while I slept. I went to lay down in Milo's room around 9 and didn't wake up again until 7 AM. It was amazing. I was so confused when I woke up - I couldn't figure out why it was light out or why the baby wasn't crying for his breakfast.

Milo and I got a lot done yesterday - pediatrician's appt and we stopped by my friend Johanna's house to visit her and her new baby, Desi. Too cute! Maybe she'll email me the pic of Milo and Desi so I can post it here...hint hint nudge nudge. :) The ped appt went great, he is up to 8 lbs 9 1/2 oz - 21.5 oz in 18 days so he's still excelling in the eating dept. He is about 20 3/4" tall, so he's grown about an inch and three quarters since he was born.

We also stopped by my office and picked up his ski pass and visited with people at work for a while. I think I'm going to go in on Thursday for a while to help out with some stuff and possibly even pick up some work to bring home. I don't know though, I don't want to get ahead of myself. If nothing else I'll take a few runs while I'm out there, that should be hilarious. Fat, weak, out of shape, bad knees...sounds like a GREAT combo for snowboarding.

I've posted some new pictures to the website and soon will be making a 'best of December' slideshow for those of you that don't want to look at hundreds of pictures of someone else's baby.
